Stop Words
by Hans Kristian Anderson on Dec.24, 2009, under Search Engine Optimization
Within numerous search engines try to keep in mind that there are certain words that are ignored. These words are called “Stop Words.” Some of the more common stop words include words like ‘the’, ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘this’, and ‘that’.
In Natural Language Processing stop words may provide some useful content; most keyword based approaches do not use grammar to parse user input, so this type of content is not used effectively.
In the search rankings stop words don’t count, but may have an effect on the actual search results. There may be a difference because of the proximity of the keywords to each other. Most results will filter the stop words and not have any effect what so ever.
