You Can’t Succeed If You Aren’t Good at Communicating

When you initially start to get into online marketing and explore the waters a bit, it’s not difficult to become overwhelmed. You’ve maybe already browsed through many articles and forum posts that are full of information on how to be the next “big thing”. The items on these lists probably all seem contradictory. One will say that you have to be patient if you wish to be the next big thing. Being able to understand business is one other claim often made by these lists. You’ll also see some that will tell you that you have to be truly creative if you desire to succeed. And, of course, you can’t forget about all of the people saying that all you have to do is pay for their software if you wish to be the next big name in online marketing!

The truth is that all of these things are crucial to your success (well, possibly not all of those software programs, but the other stuff). You do need to have patience, business savvy and creativity if you want to be successful. Of course, if you can’t clearly communicate with buyers and clients, none of the rest of it will basically matter.

Good communication means more than merely having a good sales page. You can hire a highly proficient copywriter to do that for you. A beautiful site and long FAQ are not what you need for good communication. A good web site designer and writer can take care of those things. Being a good communicator requires learning to handle interpersonal communication as well as your copy and site. What do you do then?

1. See to it that any email doesn’t sit unanswered for over 24 hours. This is no joke. The email doesn’t have to be lengthy. All you need to do is tell the original writer that you have read the email and will be answering it fully shortly. It is a good idea to include a snippet of the message the sender has written when you do this. This helps the person you email tell your mail apart from the autoreplies that other online marketers employ.

2. Avoid letting the phone ring and ring. Don’t be a call screener. You should always try to answer the phone by the third ring. This is true even if you truly don’t want to talk to the person calling you. You might be glad to know that there is one exemption to this specific rule. You don’t have to be attached to the telephone all day and all night. Rather, have clear business hours during which you can talk on the phone. Put out these hours on your site and in your voice mail message as well. And, obviously, every individual who leaves a message deserves a return call.

3. Ensure that the individuals you send messages and emails to really receive them. This indicates to them that you care about your communication with them. It will endear you even further if you include something like, “Is there anything that I can be more clear about?” so that, if they have questions, you can answer them.
