Building a List
Different Types Of Ezines You Can Create
by Hans Kristian Anderson on Feb.20, 2010, under Building a List
There are many different types and formats that you can run with, and of course there is also scheduling and the choice of selling advertising in your issues as well to think about.
First, you must pick a market. If you have your own product already, then start an ezine in that market to help promote your product and future products.
If you do not have a market to publish in yet, don’t worry, you don’t need a product to start an ezine.
But you must still pick a market. After that, you just need to set up a publishing schedule of some sort and pick a format.
Here are the setups that work!
- Schedule
I suggest you send out an ezine with a 3-5 page article of good information about once or twice per month at the least with once per week being the most.
That is all you need to send. A good formula is to send out one week with a 3-5 page article, and the next week with a solo advertisement for something you want to promote.
Then the week after that send another 3-5 page article on something your subscribers want to know about, etc
So just alternate between content and an ad, it will be very successful.
I do not suggest sending out 2 ads per week (unless you are launching a product that week, so you very rarely do more then one ad per week) or even lots of content a few times a week.
Simply emailing your list more then once per week is normally too much.
The only way this works is if your ezine is actually built around a daily schedule.
For instance, “A Joke-A-Day” style ezines are actually quite popular with office workers as they get a new joke (or funny picture or whatever) everyday and may actually be looking forward to it!
- Format
There are three different types of formats that you can use when publishing your ezine that work.
- Put the entire ezine in an email
Just put the introduction, short ad blurb and article all in one email and send it out to all of my subscribers.
This is the easiest way to do things as it doesn’t require much editing.
You can also send it out as text and not an HTML page as those can still cause problems with some email readers.
- PDF File
Another popular option is put your article in a PDF downloadable file and then send an email to your list telling them where they can download the file.
This has the added benefit of people being able to save it to their computer and view it later (more views means more people will click on the links in your ezine which means more traffic for you)
This also has an added benefit of a viral effect. You can put at the bottom (or top if you really want to stress it) of your ezine that they can pass the PDF file to their friends or make it downloadable on their web site or blog.
This can help introduce your ezine to people who are not yet subscribed to it. And of course, if your content is good and they like your ezine, they can go subscribe!
A PDF file format is certainly a decent option if you like the idea there are a l
- HTML Page
The last option is an HTML page where you put your ezine issue on your web site as a regular HTML page, then email your subscribers and give them the link to the latest issue.
This has the same benefit as the PDF file where people can refer their friends, or link to it from their own web site or blog which can generate more subscribers for you.
And it has an additional benefit of being able to use HTML in your ezine if you wanted to do more interactive content like pictures, flash animations or even video.
Which brings me to my next point, video and audio.
If you can add these to your free ezine to explain your articles/ideas, I cannot see why it wouldn’t attract subscribers.
People are drawn to entertaining videos (just look at youtube.com’s success) so adding these to your free ezine could certainly help its success!
- How to structure your ezine
There is a certain format that you can follow that accomplishes quite a few things.
- Greeting with a short introduction on what this issues article will be about..
- A short ad on a product that you are recommending
- The article
- Your resource box
- A list of helpful links
- Subscriber information

Why Start An Ezine?
by Hans Kristian Anderson on Feb.19, 2010, under Building a List
Let the truth be told, out of all of the elements of an online business for the last 10 years there is one that will consistently put the most money in your pocket, an ezine.
Even though there are probably too many lists to opt in to as it is (especially in the Internet marketing niche), I still have to recommend people start one up and start generating subscribers, as I think for the amount of time you put in to run an online list (very little), the return is well worth it.
But, here is the thing- People online are starting to unsubscribe from many lists lately because of lack of quality. You need to be creating quality.
If you aren’t producing quality content, then subscribers to your list, no matter what topic you are covering, are going to start unsubscribing in droves.
It is not only incredibly important to succeed online to build a list, but it is now more important than ever to start building a real relationship with that list, and nurturing it by offering serious value.
The people who grasp that concept are going to be the ones making a lot of money with email marketing in the future. So far, people have gotten away with low or no content, but that will surely change soon.
Put yourself in your subscribers’ shoes. Why would you stay subscribed if you just get bombarded with offer after offer and get no benefit?
You need to make your ezine a worthwhile read for people to want to read it! If you do that, the profits will follow.

15 Top Ways For Building Your Subscriber List
by Hans Kristian Anderson on Feb.15, 2010, under Building a List
This really is some good useful information. Your going to hear this a lot “the money is in the list”, read this post to understand 15 ways to build your subscriber list.
Email marketing can be profitable for any business, no matter what kind of product or service you are selling. It is significantly cheaper than other advertising methods and it helps build credibility with your subscribers. As a result, you can generate more sales and profits.
The foundation for successful email marketing is a targeted, responsive and permission-based email list. If you have a list of subscribers that trust you and consider you an expert, you’ve completed the first step and are on your way!
Below you will several list-building ideas that will help you make the most of your email marketing efforts:
1. Add a subscription form to every page of your website. Make sure it stands out so it is easy to find. If appropriate, you can also include it in more than one place. For instance, your opt-in form might always appear in the top-left corner of your site, while you also include an opt-in at the bottom of some of your popular articles.
2. Publish a Privacy Policy. Let your readers know that they can be confident you will not share their information with others. The easiest way to do this is to set up a Privacy Policy web page and provide the link to it below your opt-in form.
3. Blog religiously. Blogging is a great way to communicate with your potential customers, and it creates a nice synergy with your email marketing. Be sure to include your newsletter sign-up form on each page of your blog. You can start a free blog at Blogger or Wordpress.
4. Provide useful, relevant and unique content. Your visitors will not give you their email addresses just because they can subscribe to your newsletter free of charge. You have to provide unique and valuable information that will be useful to your subscribers.
5. Show your first issue or other sample to your visitors. This lets potential subscribers review your newsletter before they sign up to determine if it is something they’d be interested in.
6. Give away bonuses subscribers can use. Create an opt-in bonus for joining your subscriber list. You can write an ebook or PDF report, or even hire a programmer to create downloadable or web-based software. But don’t limit yourself to only a gift for new opt-ins. Remind your readers that the next bonus is coming soon. People hate to miss out on things. If you systematically pass on “goodies” throughout the year, your subscribers are unlikely to leave.
7. Contact other newsletter publishers. Introduce yourself and explore ways you may be able to help each other. Perhaps you can introduce other publisher’s newsletters or print articles they have written to your list, with a link to sign up. When you contact them, be sure to tell them why you think THEIR readers would like what you have to offer and why YOUR readers would benefit from their newsletters. This is a win-win scenario; both of you will build your lists faster!
8. Ask your subscribers to pass it on. Word of mouth is a powerful viral technique that works great with email marketing. If your subscribers find the content you share with them to be informative, they will pass your newsletter on to their friends. This can be a good source of new subscribers.
9. Make it easy for your reader to sign up. The more information you request, the fewer people will opt-in. In most cases, a name and an email address should suffice. If it’s not necessary, don’t include it here. (Note: If you don’t have a Privacy Policy, put the words “privacy policy generator” into a search engine and you should be able to find a suitable form for your readers to review.
10. Let others reprint your newsletter as long as the content is not modified. Many webmasters and newsletter publishers are actively looking for high-quality content and, if they reprint your newsletter, you will get new subscribers, traffic and links pointing to your site.
11. Archive past newsletter issues. A “library” of past newsletters is both appealing and useful to visitors and builds your credibility as an authority. In addition, if your articles are written with good SEO techniques in mind, they can send additional traffic to your web site through good search engine positioning.
12. Include a “Sign Up” button in the newsletter. If you are using plain text instead of HTML, provide a text link to your subscription page. You may feel that this is not required because the subscriber is already on your list, but remember that readers will forward your newsletters to others, or reprint it online. You want to make it easy for them to subscribe.
13. Include testimonials on your squeeze page. This is crucial. Put 1 or 2 strong testimonials from satisfied subscribers on your squeeze page. This can be in any format, but you may find that multimedia (audio or video social proof) is more “believable”. To increase that believability, include full names, locations and/or urls; don’t use “Bob K, FL” as a testimonial name.
14. Post on other blogs. Post great comments and information on similar blogs with a link to your squeeze or opt-in page. Also comment on others’ blogs through trackbacks. In most cases, your comments will be posted on their blogs with a link back to your site. This is an easy way to generate new traffic and subscribers.
15. Add a squeeze page. A squeeze page has one goal ? to get an opt-in and build your list. Think of it like a mini-sales letter for your subscription or opt-in bonus. It features a powerful headline and a couple of very important benefits that should make subscribers salivate to sign up to your list. Once created, use a service such as WordTracker to find hundreds of targeted keywords, and advertise there using pay-per-click advertising from Google, MSN and Yahoo.

Building Your Own Mailing List
by Hans Kristian Anderson on Feb.14, 2010, under Building a List
You can’t rely on others to build your mailing list for you. If you want to succeed you must do everything possible to create your own success.
Building your own list is the best way to earn the trust and loyalty of subscribers and to ensure your personal success and satisfaction. While you are building your subscriber list you can use the information you gather to start building your own mailing list. Some new business owners are afraid to ask their customers for personal information to include on their list. But for many, a mailing list can make or break a business.
A mailing list is a must have if you want to create large-scale sales and realize significant profits on the Web. Want to know why a mailing list is important? Here’s why. Typically the average customer will visit a website seven or more times before they buy something. As long as you give your customers a reason to revisit your site, they will. That is why you need a mailing list
You can mail a newsletter to your list to encourage your customers to visit your site and look at recent additions or updates. There are many statistics confirming that customers repeatedly buy from email advertisements, so don’t think you don’t need a mailing list. You do. And you need a good one at that.
